He had suffered some broken bones in his feet (and leg too, if I recall correctly) that had never healed properly. Apparently it never effected his hockey ability, but it concerned the army medics enough to rule him unfit for the war effort.

The third and final time he attempted to be a machinist within the military. Stay in Canada, probably Montreal, and work in factories that supply materials for the allies. He was turned down for that as well. Perhaps some politics were at play there because of who he was by that stage.

But we need to drop the idea that Rocket Richard tried to avoid military duty in World War II.Joe Pelletierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01906327400250923397noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28304287.post-77997069247104369292012-04-08T11:59:09.849-07:002012-04-08T11:59:09.849-07:00What everyone forgets is that when Rocket was scor...What everyone forgets is that when Rocket was scoring all those goals, the best players were off fighting and giving their lives in World War 11. So how good was he really? No nearly as good as everyone claimed.
Proud to be the son of a veteranAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28304287.post-15450243632512709852011-10-23T06:29:45.165-07:002011-10-23T06:29:45.165-07:00I was there for that last goal in Maple Leaf Garde...I was there for that last goal in Maple Leaf Gardens. I was in a corner seat at the Leaf end of the rink about 20 rows up. Of course there were no helmets in those days but the amazing thing was that I could see his black eyes glowing as he focussed on the net.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28304287.post-71797540151407768912011-05-28T20:00:55.125-07:002011-05-28T20:00:55.125-07:00My dad(who is now deceased)grew up watching Richar...My dad(who is now deceased)grew up watching Richard. He said he was such an unbelievable force on the ice.His eyes would glow, and even as a kid was often scared by the glare.Despite all the later great players he said he thought Richard was by far the best. There were times when Richard called for the puck, absolutely everyone in the Forum knew he was going to score on his own.He was something else. The Babe Ruth of hockey.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28304287.post-30708259571356707242011-04-24T12:14:05.898-07:002011-04-24T12:14:05.898-07:00my husband and I stayed at Holiday Valley in Ellic...my husband and I stayed at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville last night on our way back from canada. We had the tv on and a movie about rocket richard was on. What is really amazing the day before in the canadian k-w record milt schmidt was talking about the rocket and what an unbelievable tough player he was. I had always heard about him growing up but after watching that movie he really was the greatest hockey player ever...and no helmuts.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28304287.post-23026430227715898852010-11-17T05:24:07.642-08:002010-11-17T05:24:07.642-08:00As a child I (a Red Wing fan) would accompany my F...As a child I (a Red Wing fan) would accompany my Father (a staunch Canadiens fan) to the Olympia in Detroit when the Habs came to town. I grew up hating the Rocket, but as I grew older came to understand that what I thought was hate was actually admiration. Admiration for the Rocket's talent, tenacity, skills and abilities on the ice. When he died, the hockey world lost one of the greatest personalities it will ever know. Au revoir Rocket. Made me curious who he was. I'm American and not a hockey fan.
